Texas to Chile: Can We Borrow Your Emoji?
In emoji land, Texans have found themselves in a "flag flap," and one TikToker is calling 'em out.
According to MySanAntonio.com, in the TikTok universe, vigilant user Ivan is griping about Texas emoji fans AND highlighted a seriously comical mix-up. Video below.
What's the scoop?
Apparently, a fair number of Texans have been proudly flying the Chilean flag emoji, all the while believing it's their beloved Texas flag.
The rubes!
Imagine how many people from Texas have friends in Chile, and inserted into all of their texts such misplaced pride.
Hilarious, right?
To be fair, the flags do look similar. The Chilean flag presents a white stripe atop a red one, with a single white star in a dark blue square.
Sounds Texan?
Kind of, but the Texas flag features a blue stripe that runs top to bottom. It's a small difference, but hey, details matter.
Here's some history: The Texas flag came into being in 1839, a good couple of decades after Chile had its flag sorted in 1817.
The Chilean flag emoji has been adorning our screens on most Android and iPhone devices since 2015, but sadly, there's currently no Texan flag emoji for the Lone Star State.
Ivan's viral TikTok, asking Texans to correct the emoji gaffe, has already crossed the 2.8 million view Rubicon, so this conundrum won't go away anytime soon.
The comments section generally sides with him.
One user amusingly pointed out that the mix-up seems typical for Texans, while another argued, eh, "close enough."
Notably, this isn't the first time this issue has surfaced.
In 2017, Texas Rep Tom Oliverson urged Texans to stop using the Chilean flag emoji when showing their state pride. So, let's make sure we're sporting the right flag emoji from now on, okay?
Or, whatever. IDC.
And, isn't it about time we got a Texan flag emoji?
