Buffalo Abrasives acquired by larger Indian manufacturing company
Buffalo Abrasives traces its roots in the Russ family back to 1923 when it was founded as National Grinding Wheel by John J. Russ.
Now the North Tonawanda-based maker of resin bonded grinding wheels has been sold by owner Arthur Russ Jr. and Jeffrey Binkley, the third- and fourth-generation descendants of John J. Russ.
The company has been acquired by Sak Abrasives, an India-based company that manufactures a full range of abrasives. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
By acquiring Buffalo Abrasives, Sak gains access to a company with customers across North America in sectors that include automotive, oil and gas, aerospace and steel.
Binkley said current management will continue in their roles under new ownership and no adverse decisions on employment or production are expected. He said Sak's involvement is about potential expansion and growth.
"Sak Abrasives offers additional capabilities, products and expertise to Buffalo Abrasives," BInkley said. "It is gratifying that we can continue to have a significant manufacturing presence in North Tonawanda where it all began."
Buffalo Abrasives had about 40 employees as of last June.
