Review: Best Reuben I've ever had, at Rack It Up! Arcade in Plain Twp.

Jun 07, 2023

As you might know, I love a good Reuben. So when I kept hearing good things about the Reuben at Rack It Up! Arcade in Plain Township, I decided I had to find out for myself if it lived up to the hype.

My husband, Austin, and I went on a weeknight and were surprised to find the place was pretty busy. We walked around to check out all of the arcade games first and decided to sit at the bar and play games after, if we wanted.

The menu at Rack It Up isn't that big, but it still has plenty from which to choose. I ordered the Rack It Up Reuben ($14.99) and swapped out the chips that come with it for pasta salad, which is an extra $1. Austin landed on The Real Italian ($13.99) with pasta salad instead of chips.

I knew the Reuben was going to be piled high with corned beef based on the description and photos I had seen online. But seeing it in person is another thing. The menu describes it as Rack It Up's famous recipe of corned beef piled high and topped with Swiss cheese and slow-cooked sauerkraut on grilled rye bread.

It definitely is piled high. One of the owners, whose name I didn't catch, said it's a half pound of corned beef. She said they measure out each sandwich to keep them consistent.

Another guest, who was sitting beside me and ordered the New York-style corned beef sandwich ($16.99), which is even bigger than the Reuben, was chatting with the owner about the sandwiches.

The owner explained to him that she takes a Jewish approach to her cooking and adds lots of ingredients − her secret − and makes the corned beef in small batches. She did mention she uses cloves and cardamom, along with other ingredients.

And she mentioned the instances that people have compared her Reubens to Slyman's Restaurant and Deli − a Cleveland restaurant famous for its Reubens − makes her a little nervous. She iterated that her recipes are her own.

I’ve personally never had Slyman's, but I can say of all the Reubens I’ve had at local restaurants and chains, this one was the best. It was different and better.

The corned beef was sliced thin and had a great, warm flavor. It leaned sweeter than usual. And the kraut also leaned sweeter and less tangy than a lot of Reubens I’ve had.

The Swiss tasted fresh, and the rye had a great crunch to it without being too hard. The dressing for the sandwich was in a container on the side as opposed to slathered on the sandwich. I’ve never seen this done before, but I appreciated that I could use the amount I wanted.

There wasn't any information about the dressing on the menu, but I think it was homemade Thousand Island dressing. It was flavorful and smooth. It had more kick than most dressings I’ve had on Reubens.

After such an amazing Reuben, the pasta salad just couldn't compare. There was nothing wrong with it, but I wanted more veggies in it and a lot more dressing. I was hoping for some olives or tomatoes, but it only had peppers mixed in with the multicolored spiral noodles. That's not to say it was bad. I was just hoping for more variation.

Now onto Austin's Italian sandwich, which had a generous amount of Italian meats. It had salami, pepperoni, capicola and ham layered with provolone cheese and was topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, banana peppers and mayonnaise and was drizzled with Italian herb oil and grilled on a sub roll.

I didn't get to grab a bite, but it looked delicious. They sure don't scrimp on ingredients here. The sandwich was stacked high once again, and Austin ate every bite.

The menu also includes a turkey pesto panini, Cuban panini, triple decker BLT, breakfast panini, steak and white cheddar sandwich and a turkey club panini plus hot dogs, pizza and chili cheese nachos. All sandwiches and hot dogs are served with chips. You can upgrade to pasta salad for $1. Rack It Up offers craft and domestic beer, as well as bottled soda, bottled water and glasses of water.

Games at Rack It Up! are vintage arcade games and require quarters. There is an ATM machine and a machine to make change.
